Since you live in SW New Mexico one thing that I would STRONGLY suggest is that you put a tank on the back of your truck and drive to Mexico and get your diesel. I started this back in May of this year and it started out at an outlandish $2.17 a gallon. Now the price has gone up to a staggering $2.19 a gallon.(5.91 pesos per liter). I have a 91 gallon tank in the bed plus I take 5-5 gallon containers to fill up plus the 26 OEM tank. What a relief to only pay $2.19 instead of $4.70 as it is here in El Paso. With these prices I use my truck for work rather than my other vehicle which is gas. Not only is it cheaper in Mexico I get better mileage from using it.

That K&N air filter is something that you can put on yourself, real easy and does not void any warranty. Call your dealer's service department and ask them. The diesel kleen works like a charm. If you have any more questions about this let me know, but the tank is something I would definetly get since you are so close to Mexico, closer than people in the East and South. Thank your lucky stars.

We also have an '08 3500 duramax dually that had the exhaust in the cab problem, we contacted GM went through all thier hoops finally they called us and told us they had a "fix" the problem was they had to "fabricate" a piece that marries up to the turbo to the exhaust. It did solve the exhaust into the cab, but did nothing for the regen system on the exhaust, causing the fuel consumption. We have about 13K miles on the truck and at best get 14-15 mpg. We had an '02 same loaded truck we did the banks front to back with the PDA and got 24 mpg empty and 17+ hauling 6 tons. WISH WE NEVER SOLD THE 02. Still fighting with GM over the poor engineering of the location of the exhaust discharge pipe, it burned a huge hole right through our brand new tow-tector, GM's answer thus far is OH WELL it is inherant to the truck, yet Ford and Dodge still have side exhaust pipes. All in all we tell everyone thinking of replacing thier 02-06 to think twice!

"Alaskadully"...I just completed towing my 5th wheel (7 plus tons)from NJ to MI with Banks six gun tuner, monster exhaust with a K&N air filter and I got 11.4....What MPG while towing are you getting with the new 08 Dully?

Were you driving up hill a lot and/or was there a lot of head wind? If so there is the reason for your Bad Fuel Mileage. Just like driving in Colorado going up all those Mountains is going to suck out the fuel.

First things to check is your oil, make sure it is a synthetic brand and you are changing it every 10k miles. Next is your transmission oil, change it every 10k as well. Clean your air filter every 8 to 10k and use a K & N filter. Use Diesel Kleen in your tank to clean your injectors every time you fuel up.

These will be your cheaper solutions and if these don't work you will off to the dealer to get it checked out.

Good luck.

I would also add that you might want to check your tire pressure on your truck 75-80 PSI and check the tire pressure on what your towing. Some 5th wheels will pull easier. I had a Holiday Rambler Presidential and I now have a Carriage 5th wheel and the Carriage which is a little heavier pulls better. It has to do with the balance of the trailer axles and the king pin/payload weight. I'm on vacation right now and while traveling from NJ across PA/OH to Northern MI I got 11.4 MPG pulling approx 15-16K with Banks stuff on board

Looks like it's going to get a different grill, a different Allison Trans and improved MPG. One can only hope!

I'm in a dodge mega cab going to Cody. Our milage so far: 23.2. I have a duramax 06' with an Advantage chip setup, special air filter and drive it like it's brand new. Best I get in milage is 13.5. No wonder the GMC is going under. Is there any other after market products you've heard of to help us out?

I think you're right GM is screwed. Rumor has it that GM is going to change the 6.6L Duramax, Right now is not 2010 compliant...Dodge Ram BTW is, and if GM can't meet or come close to the MPG's your mega cab is getting now...Dodge is going to win out. There are rumors out there that Dodge Ram (re:4500) is going to make changes to improve what they have out there today i.e. lowering the rear axles ratio. I'm of the mind set that says "where there is smoke there is fire"...there are too many rumors out there...so my buying decision is on hold. If my 2002 duramax which got me 11.5 - 12.8 towing 16.5K 5th wheel died (currently have 129K miles on it) and I had to get a truck. I would get the Ram 4500, standard with exhaust brake, large brakes, 52 Gal tank and 17 MPG around town. I do wish Dodge Maga Cab came with a full size bed instead of a 6 foot bed.

GM - has a lot of issues to work out, and if I were them...I would come out with a statement on what their plans are if they don't want to lose full size market share.!
