Hey, HavingAFit...

There's now an "official" hitch available for the Fit! The brand is Curt, and it's available from ETrailer.com. It's a 1-1/4" square receiver, rated at 1500lbs. The hitch package includes the drawbar, pin and clip. No drilling is required for the hitch installation, but the skid shield (the Fit "udder") must be removed.

I am also contemplating a purchase. Please clarify -- What was the exact amount you paid for the item (in any currency), including the shipping charge to the U.S.?

Ok, see...there is a reason my welding guy got the flu! They have yet been able to reschedule me. The one you reference sounds like a much better deal. I've already bought a rack for a 2" receiver, but haven't even opened it yet, so I'm sure I can exchange it. One point of clarification...I'm not a real car savvy chick, so can you explain what you mean by the skid shield or "udder". ( I'm sure "udder" should explain it to me, but I'm still clueless!) Thanks for keeping an eye out for me!

Totol price including 20 Euros shipping is about $63. I got an email invoice but I hve no idea if and when it shipped. I'll wait for another week before I try another contact. Almost all contact has been in German, which I am not too proficient in.

Windshield cracked this morning! by jrlnc

I was driving to work this morning on a secondary street when I heard a loud pop from the windshield. I did not think it was a rock because there were no other cars on the road except one approaching from the opposite direction. I was only going about 30 mph. While driving I quickly glanced over the windshield to see if there was a new chip on it. Nothing. Later while I was on the interstate I noticed a horizontal line in the upper right third of the windshield. I hoped it wasn't a crack, but the line looked too perfect to be anything else. When I finally parked at work I got out and looked. It definitely is a crack, about 8" long. I went out to look at it later and it looks like it has grown. (It really stinks that my insurance has a $500 deductible.) The auto glass repair guy is coming this afternoon but doesn't think it is repairable. He's checking to see if they can even get the windshield.

The infamous Fit "udder" - if you look under the back end of your Fit, you'll see a black, cone-shaped thing in the center. It's a low clearance warning system, i.e., it will make a horrible scraping sound, if you're going to bottom out, before you endanger the gas tank that's under your butt. That gets removed, to make way for the hitch... which is okay, because then the hitch will serve as your early warning system.

Another good thing about going with this, instead of having someone cut off the tie-down and weld on a receiver... if you know you're going to have to take the car in for warranty work, you can always remove the hitch, and reinstall the udder.

Aha! Now I get it! Thanks for the great explanation/illustration! I had no idea my car had one of those! I am definitely going to order the Curt receiver. That seems like a much better option than my original plan!

Late early warning system? by sueter

So how does an udder that is to the rear of the fuel tank work as an early warning system? Won't you have already bottomed out on the forward stuff that was too low? Same question with regard to the idea that the udder protects the front dam.

I believe it's for when you're going backwards, down a hill (like backing down a driveway).
